How to Measure the Twist Rate of Your Rifle.

This was taken from an article in Collecting and Shooting the Military Surplus Rifle at http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/tiptwist/index.asp Article written by: Mark Trope

Before continuing make sure that the rifle being used for measuring is unloaded and safe.

The distance a bullet must travel in the bore to make one revolution.
The distance required for one complete turn of rifling usually expressed as a ratio (The Twist Rate).
First you need a cleaning rod that rotates easily.
Place a cleaning jag or loop on the cleaning rod.
With a cleaning patch over the jag or in the loop, insert the cleaning rod a few inches into the barrel.
Put a small mark on the cleaning rod even with the end of the muzzle.
Put a small Dot on the end of the cleaning rod near the handle.
Push the cleaning rod down the barrel until the Dot near the end of the cleaning rod makes one complete revolution.
Then stop.
Place another mark on the cleaning rod even with the end of the muzzle.
Withdraw the cleaning rod and measure the distance between the first mark you made at the muzzle and the second mark you made at the muzzle and you have the twist rate of your barrel!
If you measure 10 inches then your Ratio or Twist Rate is 1:10 meaning 1 revolution in 10 inches.
